Udell, Milner, DXDT Grab 5th Straight Win in FANATEC GT World Challenge
In what is becoming a familiar sight in the FANATEC GT World Challenge America powered by AWS Series, the DXDT Racing duo of Alec Udell and Tommy Milner took the overall win in Saturday’s 90-minute race at Elkhart Lake’s Road America.
Driving the No. 63 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3 R, the win was Udell and Milner's fifth straight in the in the Pro class and fourth of the last five overall.
While Milner enjoyed a lead of over 20-seconds less than 30-minutes from the end, a late-race full course yellow bunched the field up for a final five-minute sprint to the finish with the Racer’s Edge Motorsports Acura NSX GT3 EVO22 of Zach Veach and the Wright Motorsports Porsche 992 GT3 R of Elliott Skeer looking to capitalize.
“That was the last thing that I needed there,” a smiling Milner said in victory lane. “We had an amazing pit stop there. Everything went just right for us. Came out with, obviously, a huge lead in our class. And then the yellow packed it all back up again there. So those guys were quick, and the Acura there, and the Porsche was getting their lap times. And I was like, Man, I can't do that.
“I learned already from once this year where I didn't prep the tires quite right before the restart. So it was super important, obviously, here, just enough of a gap, and brought this Corvette home again. First place again. Unbelievable!”
The Corvette factory driver held off Veach and Skeer to win by 0.771-seconds.
In Pro-Am, Justin Rothberg and Robby Foley took the win in Turner Motorsports’s No. 29 BMW M4 GT3.
Will Hardeman and Alan Metni won the Am class in the No. 19 Esses Racing with Mercedes Benz of Austin Mercedes-AMG GT3.
The second FANATEC GT World Challenge race of the weekend gets the green flag at 2:15 PM on Sunday.
Rothberg Reigns in Rainy GT America Race 1
Polesitter Justin Rothberg led from start to finish to win Saturday’s 40-minute GT America powered by AWS race.
Heavy rain prior to the start forced the the first 13-minutes of the race to be run behind the safety car. Driving the No. 29 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3, Rothberg was initially pressed by James Sofas until the driver of the No. 14 GMG Audi R8 LMS GT3 was forced to serve a drive-through penalty for changing from slicks to rain tires past the time permitted.
Jason Daskalos the took up the chase in the No. 27 CRP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, closing to within a car length or two over the final few laps.
Rothberg withstood the challenge, splashing home to win by 0.729-seconds.
In GT4, Curt Swearingin, in the No. 7 ACI Motorsports Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, passed the No. 25 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 of Gray Newell on the final lap for the class win. Like Sofronas, Swearingin was forced to serve a drive-through penalty for a late change to rain tires, but was able to recover for his third win in the last five races.
Swearingin’s margin-of-victory was 1.606-seconds.
Race 2 is Sunday morning at 8:45 AM.
